Pond Lease by SCMI
The chapter has been involved with the MN DNR to improve musky fishing for today and the future. The chapter has been committed to the improvements in the quality and quantity of the resource of musky fishing in MN. Over the past 20 years, the chapter has provided the financial support to lease a pond in central MN that is used solely for the rearing of musky fingerlings. Each year hundreds of fingerlings and juvenile muskies are harvested and stocked in MN lakes in rivers. The fish have been stocked in many lakes throughout the state and most recently Lake Alexander, Shamineau, Round, White Bear Lake, and even the St Croix River. The chapter is proud of this yearly project that promotes the future of musky fishing.
DNR Volunteering
Chapter members volunteer annually with the local MN DNR to help with fish netting surveys. Each spring specific lakes in our area are netted or electroshocked for assessment and analysis of fish populations and density. Volunteers from our chapter provide aide in the process and work side by side the DNR to accomplish this task.
The Stocking of the Sauk River Chain of Lakes
In 2011, years of hard work by members of the Chapter culminated with the first stocking of this chain of lakes. Hours of work were spent working along with the DNR, lake association and lake shore owners to promote the positive aspect of musky stocking in the area chain of lakes. In 2011, there were 132 muskies ranging in size from 18-32” were stock from the leased pond that is sponsored by the Chapter. Every other year DNR stockings have taken place with 12” fingerlings since the initial in 2011.
